SOAR High School Program

Eligibility Criteria: Young adults 16 - 21 years of age with a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD who are completing high school, have recently completed high school, or have dropped out of high school

Description: This program will discuss how having a learning disability impacts on all areas of an individual's life and how to develop strategies to be successful in post-secondary education, employment, and their community. Many of the concepts taught will be reinforced with games and hands-on activities, with incentives being provided to promote participation.

Program Fee: $175 for non-LDA members, $125 for LDA members per 8-week session. Subsidies may be available.

ERASE (Effective Resources and Skills for Employment) Program

Eligibility Criteria: 16+ years of age with a self-reported learning disability or ADHD

Description: Participants will develop resumes, complete mock interviews, develop job search techniques, and develop critical workplace skills such as effective communication, time management, accepting criticism, dealing with anger, and working as part of a team. Participants will become aware of how learning disabilities and ADHD affect all aspects of their lives and will determine their strengths, weaknesses and specific strategies to succeed in an interview and on the job.

The fee is $150. The group meets twice a week. Individuals may be eligible for subsidy through Ontario Works or ODSP – Employment Support.

Strategies & Adaptive Technology Training Program

Eligibility Criteria: Adults 18+ years of age with a self-reported learning disability or ADHD

Description: Participants will be introduced to word processing software and adaptive technology software such as text-to-voice software (Kurzweil 3000), voice-to-text software (Dragon Naturally Speaking), and word prediction software (Co-Writer). This program will provide adults with the tools and skills they need to independently and effectively manage time and paper, read, do research, write and utilize conflict resolution techniques with the use of adaptive technology software.

Program Fee: $150 for non-LDA members of $100 for LDA members per 6-week session. Individuals may be eligible for subsidy through Ontario Works or ODSP - Employment Supports.

Employment Supports (Job Placement, Job Advancement, and Job Retention)

Eligibility Criteria: Youth and adults 16+ years of age with a diagnosed learning disability or ADHD who are unemployed or under employed and meet ODSP – Employment Supports’ eligibility criteria

Description: Depending on the individual’s needs, a facilitator can help the individual write a resume and cover letter, assist with a job search, and assist in filling out application forms. Once employment is obtained, a facilitator can provide job coaching, help the individual explain accommodation needs to the employer, help fill out forms, and have meetings with the employer.

Adult Recreation Support Group

Eligibility Criteria: Adults 18+ years of age with a self-reported learning disability or ADHD

Description: This group meets approximately once per month for community recreation activities. The purpose of this program is to allow adults to practice their social skills in an understanding environment and to become more active within their own community.
Examples of activities include seeing a movie or a live show, having a card night, going to Colasanti’s, going out for dinner, attending information sessions, or participating in fundraising activities.
