"I Want to Give Back"

I am a 26 year old young man who was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario. I have been diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. This means that I am highly intelligent; however, I find it difficult to deal with complex social situations. I first came to the Learning Disabilities Association of Windsor – Essex County (LDAWE) as an adult when I was looking for support. I found the college environment challenging and was not sure what direction I should take in regards to employment. As a result, I attended LDAWE’s Employment Social Skills program. I joined the Association’s Adult Recreation Group as well.
Afterwards, I decided to volunteer for LDAWE. I have volunteered over 475 hours to LDAWE over the past 5 years. When I first started volunteering, it was because I was bored and wanted something constructive to do with my time. Now, I volunteer because I want to pay something back to my community. In my volunteer role, I complete a wide variety of administrative tasks such as: photocopying, faxing, typing, preparing envelopes, and conducting the monthly health and safety inspection.
Volunteering at LDAWE has had a large impact on my life. I feel that it brings out my potential. The staff members at LDAWE are very nice. They understand what it’s like to have a disability. They take time to explain things to me. It almost feels like a family dynamic at LDAWE, with everyone working towards a common goal and purpose.
