Success Stories - Shelley

Shelley, Windsor

I was originally diagnosed with a learning disability when I was between 8-10 years old.  My learning disability is in the area of reading comprehension.  This means that it takes me longer to process what I am reading.  I also have difficulty pronouncing larger words.  I originally heard about LDAWE from my Aunt, who was a volunteer with the organization.

Originally, I received support from LDAWE to help me access disability services support while attending St. Clair College.  I was in the Early Childhood Education (ECE) program. The supports I received allowed me to have a quiet place to study, and when writing tests I received support with my reading as well as having a scribe to write out my answers.  With this support I was able to successfully obtain my diploma.

Afterwards, I went back to LDAWE and received employment supports.  My job coach helped me with my resume and with finding and keeping my job as an ECE.  I am currently 31 years old and plan on going back to St. Clair College soon to obtain another diploma, this time in Office Administration.
